Every Piece Has a Story: Recent Custom Work and One Very Memorable Board

One of the things we enjoy most here at Harvest Hills Homestead, VA is custom work.

While we love creating pieces for our regular collections, there is something especially rewarding about taking someone else’s vision and turning it into something they can use, enjoy, and hopefully pass down for years to come.

Some projects begin with a favorite quote, a special date, or an idea sketched out on the back of a receipt. Others start with a customer saying, “I know this sounds crazy, but…”

Those are usually our favorite kinds.

One of our most memorable recent commissions started with a bit of humor and a lot of trust. A customer “stole”—with permission, of course—a large rough-cut board from a close family friend. It wasn’t a finished piece or even a particularly attractive one. It was simply a beautiful piece of wood with potential and a vision for what it could become.

The mission? Completely transform it.

What arrived at our workshop as a rough slab was carefully measured, cut, shaped, and refined. We turned that single piece into a custom, double-sided butcher block cutting board that was designed to be as practical as it was beautiful. The finished board was a far cry from the rough-cut lumber that had quietly disappeared from its original home.

Thankfully, the board made its way back looking much better than when it left.

Projects like these remind us why we love what we do. Wood has a story all its own. Every grain pattern is different. Every knot, curve, and imperfection becomes part of the finished piece. No two boards are ever exactly alike, and that’s part of what makes custom work so special.

Whether you’ve got a slab of wood leaning against the garage wall, a family heirloom that deserves new life, or simply a dream of owning a full set of colorful custom boards that perfectly match your style, we love helping bring your visions to life.

Over the years, we’ve been trusted with everything from personalized gifts and engraved keepsakes to serving trays, charcuterie boards, memorial pieces, and heirloom-quality cutting boards.

Some commissions celebrate weddings and anniversaries. Others honor loved ones or commemorate milestones. Each one carries meaning, and we consider it a privilege to play a small part in those stories.

As a family-run homestead and small business, we never take that trust for granted. Every custom order that comes through our door represents someone choosing handmade over mass-produced, and that means the world to us.

So if you’ve ever looked at an old board, a forgotten piece of lumber, or even a wild idea and thought, “I wonder if this could become something beautiful?”—the answer is probably yes.

And honestly, some of our best creations begin with a story, a little imagination, and occasionally, a board that mysteriously disappears from a friend’s wood pile.

We’re always excited to see what story comes through the door next.
